Liquid nitrogen is stored at approximately -196°C and requires specialist cryogenic storage and handling. Because it is maintained at such an extremely low temperature, it naturally boils off during storage, so some nitrogen can be lost even when the equipment is not in use. The resulting nitrogen gas also expands considerably, making appropriate ventilation and storage procedures important. Compressed CO₂ provides a different approach. Stored in an approved pressurised cylinder, it remains available until required and does not suffer the continuous boil-off associated with liquid nitrogen. For clinics that use localised cryotherapy intermittently, this can provide a significant practical benefit.
TruCryo also believes the cryogen's temperature should not be confused with treatment performance. All compressed gas systems have safety considerations, and proper operating procedures and ventilation remain essential. However, avoiding the routine storage and handling of a -196°C cryogenic liquid can simplify the practical introduction of localised cryotherapy.
